Refurbished tennis courts to re-open at Mold Leisure Centre in autumn 2024

Aura Wales is delighted to announce the re-development of the four tennis courts located on the Mold Leisure Centre / Alun High School campus.

Working in partnership with Flintshire County Council and the Alun High School, Aura is overseeing the re-development of the existing tennis courts into a multi-use facility for basketball, netball and tennis which will include a new playing surface, four tennis courts with new posts and nets, two ‘3 vs 3’ basketball courts with fixed posts, backboards and hoops, one netball court with new posts, together with new fencing and lighting.

The improvement works are being funded via Sport Wales’ Court Collaboration Project which seeks to increase participation and widen access by investing in courts to revitalise and create shared use spaces for basketball, netball and tennis in safe and inclusive community settings.

Tom Williams, Centre Manager at Mold, said: “We are very excited by this investment from Sport Wales which enables us to support the growth of basketball and netball on site, in addition to being able to offer the use of tennis courts to customers for the first time since 2019.

“I would like to express my gratitude to Flintshire County Council and the High School for working collaboratively, and having a shared vision, which has led to us securing valuable external funding to provide a variety of sports facilities and opportunities for local residents to engage in physical activity.”

Speaking on behalf of the Alun High School, Stacey Bullick, Facilities Manager, commented: “The re-development of the existing tennis courts into a multi-use facility will have a hugely positive impact on pupils of both the Alun and Ysgol Maes Garmon.

“With over 2,000 pupils across both high schools, the ability to offer a variety of sports and physical opportunities is vital to enhancing the health and well-being of our students. Many pupils try a sport for the first time while at school and then go on to play for the school team or a local club in the community, where they continue to develop critical skills including leadership, communication, and resilience. At a time when technology is often the ‘go to’ form of entertainment, being able to offer choices for improving health while having fun will make a significant difference.”

Construction work on the re-developed courts has taken place during the school summer holidays with the new multi-use facility due to open this autumn.
