Huddle Unite Girls Football Festival at Deeside Leisure Centre

“Women and girls football is being celebrated across the world at the moment so it was lovely for our girls in Flintshire to enjoy it too!”

On Tuesday 5 July, we were delighted to host a Girls Football Festival at Deeside Leisure Centre for children aged between 5-8 years. The festival took place on Deeside Leisure Centre’s outdoor 3G pitches and was supported by the FAW.

The aim behind the festival was to create opportunities for girls to enjoy football training activities in a fun and friendly atmosphere. 25 female volunteers aged 13-17 from various secondary schools in Flintshire helped to provide activities during the festival, and 125 girls from 10 different primary schools took part and showed us their football skills.

The Aura Sport Development team worked closely with the FAW to make the event a success and provided goodie bags for each girl in attendance which included a medal, certificate and t-shirt, as well as plenty of information about local girls’ football clubs. The festival took place the day before the start of the Women’s Euros 22 and each girl was given a timetable of the matches to encourage them to go home and follow the tournament.

Bethan Conway, School and Community Sport Coordinator, expressed her thoughts on behalf of the whole Aura team, saying: “It was great to see so many girls enjoy the festival and have fun playing football. All the volunteers did a wonderful job delivering fun and inclusive sessions that were enjoyed by all. We want to see more girls participating in sport, and this festival was an excellent way to encourage them to fall in love with football from a young age. Women and girls football is being celebrated across the world at the moment so it was lovely for our girls in Flintshire to enjoy it too! It’s been great to work with the FAW on this and other projects, like UEFA Disney Playmakers, and we look forward to working together again in the future.”

The whole Aura team would like to thank everyone who attended and hope that they enjoyed the event. For more information about local football opportunities, please contact Beth by emailing: beth.conway@aura.wales
