New 3G Pitch now open at Deeside Leisure Centre!

Aura is excited to introduce a brand new 3G 7-a-side football pitch at Deeside Leisure Centre!

Work began on 6 January 2020 after Aura secured funding from one of Sport Wales’ ‘Place for Sport’ grants. Across Wales, more than £1m worth of ‘Place for Sport’ grants has been shared among 118 sports clubs and organisations to help modernise, protect or create new sports facilities.

Welcoming the news, Mike Welch, Aura’s Managing Director, said: “Aura feels passionately that there should be a place for sport for everyone. This funding will enable a greater number of local residents to enjoy the lifelong benefits of sport and physical activity.”

Lee Breeze, Deeside Leisure Centre’s Development Officer, similarly expressed his excitement about the completion of the new facility, saying: “The grant funding from Sport Wales has enabled us to bring this facility to life and will hugely benefit our existing outdoor provision. We can’t wait to work with national governing bodies and local clubs in developing grassroots sports across Flintshire.”

Representatives from Wales Rugby Union (WRU), Sport Wales, and the Football Association of Wales Trust (FAW Trust), joined Aura colleagues at Deeside Leisure Centre on 2 March 2020 to celebrate the opening of the new facility.

Matt Wenn – a representative from Sport Wales – expressed his enthusiasm, saying: “3G provision is an absolute need for local authorities across Wales – especially as it is such a versatile service which takes the load off grass pitches in bad weather. Aura is thinking outside of the box with what they have planned for the new 3G pitch, including both football and rugby provision.”

The new facility will be utilised for both football and rugby provision and will enable Aura Wales to work closely with both the FAW Trust and WRU. Allan James – Rugby Co-ordinator for North East Wales explained: “this is the first time that WRU and Aura will be collaborating to provide diverse and inclusive rugby opportunities – including a Walking Rugby programme and a two strand Touch Rugby programme for children and adults: it is all very exciting!”

Similarly, Mike Parry from the FAW Trust, expressed his excitement regarding the future usage of the facility: “this will have a positive impact on the local area and enable Aura to further provide inclusive opportunities for grass roots and girls football. The FAW Trust is excited to be building relationships with both Sport Wales and Aura Wales.”

Demand has been very high for the hire of the new 3G pitch; to express interest in booking the facility, please email: and include your preferred days and times.
